How and how to clean a down jacket yourself

High-quality outerwear is not cheap, and that is why it should be worn for more than one season. However, after constant wear, stains and dirt remain on the fabric. Washing a piece of clothing is risky, especially if it is a down jacket, as the filler can clump. In this case, the jacket can be thrown away. You can give a thing to dry cleaning, but if you remove every planted stain in this way, you can go broke: it is effective, but it costs a lot of money. Therefore, any housewife needs to know how to clean a down jacket at home without washing and without streaks in order to wear it for a long time.

Cleaning a down jacket with improvised means

Many housewives do not trust their down jacket to dry cleaning and do not wash the thing in a typewriter. And this is not surprising. Firstly, if the down jacket has fur that does not come unfastened, a lot of rhinestones, buckles or decorative ornaments, then cleaning with chemicals is prohibited. Secondly, during washing, even at low speeds, the fluff often gets off, and the stains do not go anywhere - the thing remains dirty and becomes unsuitable for further wearing. In addition, the down jacket label may contain a prohibition for machine washing. How to deal with pollution in this case?

Salt and starch

In order to clean a down jacket at home without washing, it is not at all necessary to spend fabulous money on expensive products or dry cleaning. It is enough to prepare an effective cleaning composition from what is always at hand. There are many cheap and easy ways to clean a down jacket at home.One of them is the removal of contaminants with table salt and potato starch.

  1. It is necessary to prepare a bowl, pour salt and starch into it in equal amounts. Then water must be added to the dry mixture until a consistency similar to batter is obtained.
  2. It is better to place the down jacket on a hard surface and fix it so that all stains are visible.
  3. The resulting starch-salt mixture is applied to the most problematic greasy areas: elbows, collar, cuffs, pockets and seams. Simply apply the product with a napkin and let it dry. If the dirt is strong, then you can use a soft brush or sponge.
  4. Rinse off the remnants of the mixture with warm water gently and thoroughly so that there are no streaks, and hang the garment to dry.
It is important to know that it is better to dry a down jacket in the fresh air or in a draft, but in no case over gas or electric appliances! A thing can stretch and lose its shape, not to mention the fact that this drying method is a fire hazard.

If it is necessary to remove a greasy stain, then lemon juice or vinegar is added instead of water and the mixture is brought to the same semi-liquid consistency. Wheat flour can be used instead of starch. The method is very effective, but stains can remain on the product, therefore, such cleaning is often done before hand washing.

Ammonia and detergent

Another equally effective and very simple way is to dry wash the down jacket with ammonia and dishwashing detergent.

  1. 1 tsp is poured into a clean dish. ammonia and the same amount of detergent or liquid laundry soap. Then half a glass of water is added here.
  2. The solution is whipped until foam is formed, a soft sponge is wetted in it, after which you can start cleaning. When the stains are old and stubborn, it is better to leave the product on the down jacket for a while. Fresh dirt, as a rule, is erased immediately.
  3. After cleaning, the item should be rinsed with a clean cloth and warm water, and then dried in the fresh air.

This cleaning method is simple and effective, since ammonia effectively dissolves grease and dirt.

Glass liquid

Glass liquid usually also contains ammonia, in addition, it foams well, so if it is at hand, it is a worthy replacement for this self-prepared solution.

Cleaner

A couple of cleaning options are described above using improvised means, but there are also special compositions for cleaning a down jacket. Dry cleaning of a down jacket at home without washing is carried out by them. In order to clean down jackets at home, you can purchase a stain remover for clothes or buy a special product for cleaning down jackets, such as DownWash. Cleaning steps:

  • the down jacket needs to be spread so that the stains and dirt are clearly visible, it is even better to fix it on a hard surface, slightly stretching it;
  • greasy and dirty places are treated with a special agent, and greasy and hard-to-remove stains with a stain remover;
  • problem areas should be lightly rubbed to remove dirt from the fibers, and then rinsed with water several times.

This method is more expensive, since you have to spend money on special cleaning compounds. But, having resorted to it, there is no doubt that there will be no trace of pollution. Of course, it is possible to clean the down jacket with washing powder, but there is still a risk of spoiling it, since its granules can clog the fabric, and the product must breathe. It is for this reason that the special liquid cleaning agent for down jackets is more gentle and at the same time effective.

Stain removal

A white jacket is easier to clean than a colorful one, since gasoline can be used. If the item of clothing is of high quality, then you can clean both a bright multi-colored down jacket and a light down jacket. First you should try to see if there will be a trace of gasoline in a small inconspicuous area, and then proceed to remove the stain. In this case, you should follow some recommendations:

  • do not use hard brushes and sponges, so as not to damage the fabric and not spoil the color of the product;
  • wipe the stain from the edges to the center, and not vice versa;
  • use only purified gasoline;
  • if after removing the stains the down jacket is planned to be washed using an automatic wash, a couple of tennis balls should be placed in the laundry compartment. While the washing machine is running, they will whip up the fluff, which will prevent it from churning.
Petrol

Gasoline is a solvent for grease and dirt, and with proper use, all greasy stains will quickly come out, and a white down jacket will be worn for more than one season.

Fur collar cleaning

Quite often, winter clothes are decorated with natural or artificial fur.Usually cuffs, a hood and a fastener line are decorated in this way. Over time, the down jacket becomes dusty, the fur turns gray. You can clean such a delicate element of down jacket decor at home.

Faux fur can simply be washed in water using liquid detergent. After rinsing, you should not wring it out much, as it may lose its shape. When the jewelry is dry, it should be well fluffed with a comb with soft bristles.

With natural fur, you need to be extremely careful - it cannot be washed, and it can only be cleaned superficially. The villi are wiped with vinegar - thus the dust is erased. You can also brush with detergent, but you can’t wet the product very much, you can only wipe it with a slightly damp cloth.

It is useful to know that rabbit fur, which is most often used to decorate a down jacket, is cleaned with a warm (but not hot!) iron through a sheet of paper. Thus, under the influence of temperature, grease and dust are absorbed into the paper, and the collar and cuffs remain clean without washing.

It turns out that cleaning a down jacket at home without washing is possible in several ways, even if the thing is made of delicate fabrics.Before you start cleaning, remember that chlorine-containing products should never be used. The main thing is the result, therefore, how to clean a down jacket - with a composition prepared by oneself or with a special chemical, it does not matter.
