Cleaning the filter in the washing machine

Almost all owners of washing machines have heard many times that for the normal functioning of the washing machine, you need to clean the filter regularly. But what kind of filter is this and where it is located, many do not know. Some owners climb to the drain hose to look for this filter there, while others, on the contrary, believe that the filter should be in front of the water supply in order to purify the water and are looking for it.

In fact, both sides are right here: there are two filters on the washing machine - one for draining water, the other cleans the incoming water from large particles. Can also stand additional filter for water purification and softening, which you could install yourself, but such a filter does not apply to the machine itself and we will not consider it here.

Cleaning the drain filter in the washing machine

When people say that they need to clean the filter in the washing machine, most often they mean this particular filter.
Drain filter in washing machine
There is a filter in the washing machine from below under a plastic cover. Or if you do not have this cover, then you need to remove the lower plastic narrow panel. It is held on latches that you need to press with your hand or a screwdriver, and remove the cover.

The filter itself is a kind of plug screwed into the washing machine. It is very easy to unscrew the filter of the washing machine: to do this, grab the special recess on this very plug and turn it counterclockwise. Then continue to unscrew it in the same direction.
There are situations when the filter is attached with an additional bolt.If there is one, then first you need to unscrew it with a screwdriver.

Be prepared for the remaining water to flow through the resulting hole. Therefore, before you start unscrewing the filter, substitute a low dish under it. You can also tilt the washing machine back a little to fit a larger bowl.

After you unscrew the filter and all the water has flowed out, you need to clean out all the debris from the hole. It is best to take a flashlight and shine it so that you can better see all the debris left inside. If everything is cleaned inside, now you need to clean the washing machine filter itself. To do this, wash it well and remove all dirt from it.

After that, screw the filter back and close the cover or return the bottom panel to its place.

Screw the filter all the way in. It should sit tight and not hang out. If you screwed everything tight enough, then there should be no leaks.

What to do if the drain filter does not unscrew

There are situations when the filter is so clogged with dirt and stuck that it cannot be unscrewed. In this case, you need to put the washing machine on its side and unscrew the pump from the inside, and then try to unscrew the filter from the inside.
Unscrew the drain filter
It happens that here it does not lend itself, then you can completely remove the entire structure and disassemble it already on the table in convenient conditions.

As you can see, cleaning the drain filter of the washing machine is extremely simple.Do not forget to carry it out regularly, then you will not have to suffer with unscrewing it. Also, through this filter, you can get small parts that got into the washing machine during washing (coins, bones from bras, etc.).

Cleaning the inlet filter of the washing machine

A similar filter is not installed on all washing machines and is designed for rough water purification from rust and other contaminants. It is a small mesh, which eventually becomes clogged with dirt and needs to be cleaned.

The inlet filter of the washing machine is located at the water inlet valveto which it is attached inlet hose. Accordingly, in order to clean this filter, you must first turn off the water supply. Next, unscrew the inlet hose from the side of the washing machine and use the pliers to remove the filter from the valve.
Take the filter out of the valve
As you can see, your small strainer is clogged and rusty, so you need to clean it. A toothbrush is ideal for cleaning such a filter. We take it and under the pressure of water we clean and rinse the mesh.
Then we collect everything in the reverse order.

This filter, like the drain filter, needs to be cleaned regularly.. How often? It depends on the quality of the water in your tap. The dirtier the water and the more debris in it, the more often you need to clean the inlet filter. If you are worth washing machine water pre-filter, then the mesh filter will not clog and it will not have to be cleaned often.

Thanks a lot for the advice! The machine rumbled and stopped draining water. As a result, the whole repair consisted in cleaning the drain filter. I was very scared because I thought that I broke my daughter's typewriter. I even managed to fix everything myself, a pensioner. Thank you! Real care for people!!! And what a saving of our meager funds!!!!!!!!!!!

(Adding to the previous com) I have added your site to the “Favorites” folder. I will recommend it to all my friends.

Thanks for the very helpful information. The machine almost stopped pouring water and poured for 5-7 minutes and sometimes even turned off. Already wanted to call the master. my husband (he is 85 years old) cleaned the filter and the machine began to pour water very quickly. You saved us a tiny amount of money. Once again, thank you and our regards.

I drained the water through the filter, checked that the pump blades are spinning when the steamer is turned on, but the machine starts flashing after the first cycle, what else should I check?

Informative, thanks a lot

Thanks for the article, I cleaned the filter, I'm waiting for the end of the wash. Hope it helps. The site was really helpful.

Thank you very much for your support and for the value of your site

Thanks a lot! Clear and concise, nothing more!

Thank you for the article!!! Half an hour ago, I succumbed to panic: the water did not drain. Knocked out an error. On your advice, I unscrewed the plug, compressed air came out, and then the soapy water began to whip. Nuuu, she flooded the floor a little, and the neighbor from below is harmful. But! The air came out, and the impeller spun, and the water began to drain as it should! Hooray))
Question: under the lid next to the filter plug, a small hose was found, again closed with a cork. What is he for? Atlant car.

And what to do if nothing flows through a small hose, and when you open the filter cover, a sufficient amount of water flows out. Due to the low location of this compartment and the lid that opens down, nothing can be substituted under it? What it is?

The washing machine suddenly stopped working during the cycle (Siemens, old, but German). Doesn't drain water either. Is it possible to clean the filter at the bottom if there is water in the car? Or what to do in this case? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I need help, I decided to clean the filter, because it’s been 6 months since we bought the washer, we haven’t cleaned it, and no matter how often we wash it ... the problem is, the filter can’t be unscrewed ... there are 4 holes, there are bolts in three of the bottom .... model Ariston Hotpoint AQS63F29

hello! I have a Samsung washing machine, just yesterday I loaded the wash, turned it on, and water began to flow out through the compartment where I pour the washing powder. Tell me, what could be the reason? And is the piston box removable?

The second day I bought the Zanussi ZWQ 61226wi vertical washing machine, I didn’t find in the instructions where the drain filter is located, I lie below behind a solid plastic panel. how to open, for what to cling it is not clear, I'm afraid to break the clips. I wanted to buy a model where the filter is located in the drum, but I made a mistake in choosing. Please tell me how to remove the plastic.

You probably need to tighten the drain pump plug for a reason. I mean that a piece broke off from the cork inside when twisting and it became very difficult to unscrew. Probably you need to get into some kind of grooves or slots and then twist. Initially, water was leaking from under the drain pump plug.

Thank you so much for the article, I did not even expect that I could handle it on my own. I cleaned the filter as described in the article and the machine started working.
