An automatic washing machine can handle any kind of washing, including outerwear. But some types of fabrics are extremely undesirable to wash in automatic machines. Yes, and small spots are easier to remove in other ways than to wash all the clothes entirely. In this review, we will look at how to clean a coat at home without washing and what you need for this. And in order to make the review as complete as possible, we will touch on the topic of cleaning coats made from a variety of fabrics.
Removing dust
If the coat has hung on a hanger for a long time and there is no need to clean it of dirt, then it just needs to be cleaned of dust - it could accumulate during the period while the clothes hung in the closet or on a hook in the hallway, waiting for the next season. And here we can easily do without any washing, using a regular clothes brush:
- We hang the coat in a ventilated place (in our own yard, on the balcony);
- Let it air out a little to remove odors;
- We arm ourselves with a clothes brush and carefully remove all the dust.
If necessary, you can let the clothes hang in the air for several hours.If a breeze is blowing outside, then this is very good - it will air the coat, cope with unpleasant odors and remove dust. But remember that exposing clothes to direct sunlight is highly discouraged - this applies to the greatest extent to coats made of expensive and delicate fabrics.

Before cleaning the coat, it is worth putting a piece of cloth under it. It will be able to absorb excess moisture and will not allow to stain everything around.
There is another way to clean the coat from dust at home without washing - for this you need to arm yourself with a sponge dipped in soapy water (it is advisable to use specialized products sold in hardware stores).Gently run the sponge over the fabric, applying foam, then rinse it off with water and leave the clothes to dry. To avoid damage to the coat, this procedure should be carried out in a ventilated place, but not in the sun.
Steam removal of dust and light dirt
The most ordinary steamer will help to clean the coat without washing - it removes dust, refreshes all types of clothes after a long stay in the closet. Steamers are sold in hardware stores and run on clean water. The steam generated by them straightens the fibers of the fabric, eliminates odors, and effectively removes dust pollution.
Steamers are suitable for all types of fabrics, including delicate ones. But before use, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the contents of the label on your coat.
Airing
Removing the smell of sweat from a coat without washing is as easy as shelling pears - the simplest airing will help with this.To do this, outerwear must be hung on hangers on a balcony or loggia, making sure that direct sunlight does not fall on it. Some advise taking advantage of the frosty winter air by hanging the thing for several days in the bitter cold - this will help get rid of the smell of sweat.
If your coat starts to smell of sweat, use special conditioners for outerwear - they will help to clean the coat without washing. Apply the selected product to the problem areas of the lining and wait a couple of hours. After the conditioner dries, you can use the thing. More detailed instructions for the use of a particular product can be found on its label.
To clean your coat from the persistent smell of sweat will help:
- Apple vinegar;
- Dry citric acid;
- Potato starch;
- Weak solution of ordinary vinegar;
- Ammonia.
Apply the chosen product to the lining and leave until the morning. Overnight, the odors should completely disappear.
Let's go to the dry cleaners
The easiest way to clean a coat without washing is to take it to the dry cleaners. First, dry cleaners are better versed in how to remove contaminants from certain materials. And secondly, chemical cleaning treats all types of fabrics as carefully as possible. Its undoubted advantage will be the ability to quickly deal with the most persistent pollution. The downside is the high cost of services and the possible lack of good dry cleaning nearby.

Some types of stains, such as fuel oil or machine oil, are extremely difficult to remove. In some cases, even high-quality dry cleaning may not be able to cope with such a problem.

Cleaning products
If your coat has any stains, we recommend cleaning it without washing, using special stain removers. They are sold in supermarkets and household chemical stores.Some people manage to clean their coats with machine interior cleaners - a great and inexpensive solution.
Grease stains are very easy to remove with potato starch - you can find it at any grocery store. Apply it on the stain and leave for a few hours, then remove it with a brush or sponge. The most common table salt will help remove stains from wine, but this should be done immediately, and not after a few days. A mixture of denatured alcohol, soapy water and soda will help remove old stains of wine and fruits (20 g of soda and 15 ml of alcohol should be diluted in 500 g of water).
A soapy solution is the perfect way to clean a drape coat without washing. To do this, you can use not only soap, but also a liquid agent that replaces the usual powder. Just dilute it in water and apply with a brush to the surface of the clothes. After half an hour, remove the remnants of the solution with the same brush dipped in clean water - thereby refreshing the surface of the fabric and removing light dirt.
How to clean coats made from different fabrics
We have already talked about general recommendations for cleaning outerwear and found out how to dry wash coats at home. Let's now give recommendations for different fabrics - they need to be cleaned in different ways to achieve optimal results.

Cleaning a wool coat
To clean a woolen coat without washing at home from surface dirt, a regular brush or roller with a Velcro pad will help. If you don't have one or the other, use sticky tape - a great thing to get rid of dust, gray deposits and small hairs. You can also treat outerwear with a soap solution or a special cleaner, working with it according to the instructions.
A simple mixture of ammonia and table salt will help clean a wool coat - you need to prepare a gruel from these components and apply it to the fabric. After 20-30 minutes, the slurry is removed, the surface of the clothes is brushed. If all else fails, use a wet wash in the washing machine on the Wool program (available in many automatic machines).

Cleaning a cashmere coat
Talcum powder will help to clean a cashmere coat from greasy stains - sprinkle it with dirt and leave it for several hours. After that, we process this place with a brush, but as carefully as possible, since the cashmere fabric is very delicate. And if you managed to spill wine or tea on cashmere, treat fresh stains with the most ordinary salt. As for old stains, they should be entrusted to dry cleaning.
If your coat is made of dark cashmere, you can try cleaning it with a cotton pad soaked in gasoline - this will effectively remove oil stains. It is recommended to use gasoline for refueling lighters, as it has a very mild odor and evaporates quickly.

We clean the drape coat
Cleaning a drape coat without washing is very easy - for this we need any washing powder. We fill the stain with a small amount of powder, three with a damp sponge. After a while, repeat the friction with a sponge and remove the remnants of the product with a brush. After that, we hang the clothes in a ventilated place and wait for the wet spot to dry completely. If contamination persists, repeat the procedure.

Cleaning tweed outerwear
Cleaning a tweed coat without washing is the easiest. To do this, we do not even need any auxiliary means. The thing is that this fabric is immune to pollution.And even if they appear (for example, after walking through dirty streets after rain), they can be easily removed with a regular brush. Stubborn stains can be easily removed with soapy water (or a gel laundry detergent solution).

We clean suede
If there are no problems with tweed, then it is more difficult to clean a suede coat - it all depends on the nature of the pollution.With greasy stains, ordinary potato starch is best handled - it should be poured over the greasy stain, wait 2-3 hours, and then remove with a brush. Since suede is soft leather, nothing bad will happen from such processing. Milk with soda (two teaspoons per glass), cotton pads with gasoline and table salt also help against fatty contaminants.
Shiny areas of a suede coat can be cleaned with breadcrumbs - crumble fresh bread onto a cloth, then work it with rubbing movements. Bread crumb effectively removes many impurities. But scuffs are best removed by steaming - hold the right place over the spout of the kettle or treat the coat with a steamer.

How to clean a leather coat
There will be no particular difficulties in this matter. The skin is easily wiped off various contaminants, including simple soapy water. If the stains are more serious, add a spoonful of ammonia to a glass of soap solution - this mixture effectively copes with many contaminants.If the stains are salty (often appear after rains or water from the roads), then the most ordinary vinegar will help to cope with them.

Cleaning a polyester coat
If you want to go without washing, try cleaning your polyester item with soapy water. Stains from fruits, berries, tea, coffee and wine should be sprinkled with table salt, then washed off with the same solution - they should disappear. You can also use store-bought stain removers to do without washing. A solution of borax will help to cope with pollution, which after a few minutes is eliminated with a solution of citric acid.
